QID Association Held a Webinar on Financial Reporting and Tax Risks

On May 13, 2025, the Qazaq Independent Directors (QID) Association held a webinar titled “Beyond the Numbers: Financial Reporting and Tax Risks Through the Eyes of an Independent Director.” The event focused on the key issues that members of boards of directors and top managers face when analyzing financial statements and assessing tax risks.

During the webinar, participants discussed:

          •          the possibility of manipulating financial indicators;

          •          the most dangerous tax risks for business;

          •          the role and responsibility of an independent director in these matters;

          •          measures that help avoid legal and reputational consequences.

Rita Espenbetova, Partner at the audit firm Finex-Standart, a tax consultant, and a member of the QID Association of Independent Directors, shared practical examples of reporting manipulation, emphasizing the importance of professional skepticism from directors and foundational knowledge in IFRS (IAS).

Inna Alkhimova, Partner and Head of Tax and Legal Practice at KPMG in the Central Asia and Caucasus region, and a member of the QID Association of Independent Directors, spoke about typical tax risks that companies face. She also explained what an independent director should pay attention to when considering tax aspects in board work.

The meeting was moderated by Gulnara Musina, a member of the Supervisory Board of the QID Association, Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), an expert in corporate governance, compliance, and risks, an EY trainer-consultant, and an independent director.

The event sparked an active discussion. Participants asked questions, shared practical case studies, and exchanged experience, making the discussion especially rich and valuable.
